Uric Acid Testing

Definition

Uric acid tests are tests that are done to measure the levels of uric acid in blood serum or in urine.

Purpose

Urine test

Reference values for 24-hour urinary uric acid vary from laboratory to laboratory but are generally found within the following range: 250-750 mg/24 hours.

The laboratory should also be notified if the patient has had recent x-ray tests requiring contrast dyes. These chemicals increase uric acid levels in urine and decrease them in blood.

Precautions

Blood test

Patients scheduled for a blood test for uric acid should be checked for the following medications: loop diuretics (Diamox, Bumex, Edecrin, or Lasix); ethambutol (Myambutol); vincristine (Oncovin); pyrazinamide (Tebrazid); thiazide diuretics (Naturetin, Hydrex, Diuril, Esidrix, HydroDiuril, Aquatensen, Renese, Diurese); aspirin (low doses); acetaminophen (Tylenol); ascorbic acid (vitamin C preparations); levodopa (Larodopa); or phenacetin. These drugs can affect test results.

There are some lucky gout patients that only suffer from a gout attack once in their lives. However, for the majority of the gout patients, those flares will return. If you do not treat the gout attacks when they happen, as time passes by, they will become more and more severe and last even longer than the previous gout flares.

Why Do I Suffer From Gout? Gout most likely can be contributed to your diet and lifestyle. Sufferers from this form of arthritis are typically those people who have a poor diet and an inactive lifestyle. They usually have a diet high in purines (found in animal-based foods). Once in the body purines break down into uric acid.

Risks

Risks for the blood test are minimal, but may include slight bleeding from the puncture site, a small bruise or swelling in the area, or fainting or feeling lightheaded.

In addition to fresh cherries and cherry drinks you can also choose from tart cherry juice concentrate and tart cherry capsules. One of the benefits of tart cherry juice concentrate is it takes approximately 100 cherries to make just one ounce of tart cherry juice. So the tart cherry juice is a highly concentrated way to get your daily dose of cherries. www.traversebayfarms.com

Preparation

The uric acid test requires either a blood or urine sample. For the blood sample, the patient should be fasting (nothing to eat or drink) for at least eight hours before the test. The urine test for uric acid requires a 24-hour urine collection. The urine test does not require the patient to fast or cut down on fluids. Some laboratories encourage patients to drink plenty of fluids during the collection period.

Key Terms

Fanconi's syndrome
A rare disorder caused by vitamin D deficiency or exposure to heavy metals.

A metabolic disorder characterized by sudden recurring attacks of arthritis caused by deposits of crystals that build up in the joints due to abnormally high uric acid blood levels. In gout, uric acid may be overproduced, underexcreted, or both.
Hyperuricemia
Excessively high levels of uric acid in the blood, often producing gout.
Purine
A white crystalline substance that is one of the building blocks of DNA. Uric acid is produced when purine is broken down in the body.
Uric acid
A compound resulting from the body's breakdown of purine. It is normally present in human urine only in small amounts.
Uricosuria
Increased levels of uric acid in the urine.
Wilson's disease
A rare hereditary disease marked by the buildup of copper in the liver and brain, causing loss of kidney function.

Bio

Abnormally low uric acid levels may indicate that the patient is taking allopurinol or probenecid for treatment of gout; may be pregnant; or suffers from Wilson's disease or Fanconi's syndrome.

Secondly, although tart cherries have been studied for years, no real effort was ever really made to promote the health benefits of the tart cherry. However, the cherry growers are really getting the word out about cherries to the world.

Diagnosing gout is not very complicated. If having any gout signs go see your doctor.He/ she will do a blood test to see what are your uric acid levels. If there is still doubt, some fluid is then taken from your joints and checked for crystals. Then, based on the results, you can be diagnosed with gout or not.

Hyperuricemia is the build up of uric acid crystals and is directly responsible for the pain you are feeling. There crystals can find their way to the joint spaces where they will cause painful inflammation. Sometimes the crystals can appear as lumps under the skin and even disrupt the function of the kidneys.

In addition to fighting joint pain, research also shows tart cherry juice helps to soothe sore muscles due to physical exercise. According to a study published in the British Journal of Medicine in June 2006, found that a drink made with tart cherry juice proved effective in reducing exercise-caused muscle pain and exercise-induced strength loss. The study was conducted on college athletes and the results basically found that the tart cherry drink helped to reduce pain and strength loss when compared to the placebo.

This particular arthritis type manifests itself through sudden, painful attacks. Gout attacks develop very quickly, in a few hours time, and can last as long as three to four days, if they are untreated. Severe pain, redness, inflammation and swollen joints are the main symptoms of a gout flare, that mostly affects the joint of the big toe. Other joints can be affected by a gout attack as well. Your hand, foot, ankle and knee joints can be affected by these gout flares.

Uric acid is highly tied to gout, because the excess of this acid in your blood is actually the cause of a gout. Little crystals form as a result, they collect in the joints and cause pain and inflammation. This is gout at the beginning. The breakdown of chemicals called purines is what uric acid is made from. These chemicals can be found in different foods and alcohol. So if you suffer from gout or if you try to prevent a gout case from happening to you, try to avoid those things as much as possible.

And There is More ... Recent research is suggesting that the human body has an internal intelligence that allows itself to naturally heal itself if given the proper tools. With gout, that includes your diet, nutrition, vitamins, supplements, herbs and exercise.

Here are some tips to get you started for curing your gout symptoms! 1. Watch what you are eating! Keep a food journal of everything that you eat and drink for one week. Try to find what foods or beverages are causing your attacks.

How to Cure the Gout Knowledge is the key to not only treating the disease, but preventing any additional damage to your body and kidneys. You most also remember that being healthy is not a once a year type of thing; you must make your health a priority and a lifestyle change.

In fact, just a few years ago the FDA threatened over two dozen cherries companies for sharing information on the research conducted by the USDA how cherries help fight gout and joint pain. So much for freedom of speech in America. This is something similar to what happened to the cranberry sellers several years ago. They were also threatened. But look at it today, research shows that cranberries can fight urinary tract infections. Thanks for the freedom of speech in America.

Cherries are a natural and high source of Melatonin. This helps to regulate circadian rhythms and maintain nightly sleep patterns. Also, cherries have been shown to have naturally occurring anthocyanins. Although, anthocyanins are present in also any number of colored fruit, the unique make-up of the compounds found in the tart cherry helps to fight joint pain. So in other words, the compounds in the tart cherry are natural COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitors.

Increased production of uric acid may result from eating foods that are high in purine. Increased uric acid levels due to overproduction may also be caused by gout, by a genetic disorder of purine metabolism, or by metastatic cancer, destruction of red blood cells, leukemia, or cancer chemotherapy.

2. Learn what foods are putting you at risk. Foods higher in purines will usually cause the problems. Avoid meats such as kidneys, liver, red meats, fish, beans, lentils, peas and alcohol. To begin your treatment you need to avoid these foods and gradually re-introduce these foods to your diet after you lower your uric acid levels.

Cherries have had a long history of being described as the "the healing fruit". Just as cranberries prevent urinary tract infections and an apple-a-day can keep the doctor away, tart cherries are known to stop gout and arthritis pain. But if tart cherries are so good, why haven't you heard more about them? Well first, the FDA doesn't want you to know.

4. Get vitamins A, B5 and E! Studies have shown that fruits and vegetables can drastically flush uric acids because of the fiber content and nutrients and antioxidant properties. People deficient in these vitamins typically get gout.

Gout is another from of arthritis, which is known to case sudden attacks. The gout causes are known, but unfortunately this condition can not be cured. Treatments only help in reducing the severity of the gout symptoms and to prevent, as much as possible, further gout flares.

3. Obesity can lead to high uric acid levels in your blood. You should make it a goal to get within 30 pounds of your target weight. Remember that the only healthy way to lose weight is a sensible diet and exercise. All other fad diets usually won't work!

Decreased excretion of uric acid is seen in chronic kidney disease, low thyroid, toxemia of pregnancy, and alcoholism. Patients with gout excrete less than half the uric acid in their blood as other persons. Only 10-15% of the total cases of hyperuricemia, however, are caused by gout.

For most people, the uric acid is dissolved in the blood, and processed by the kidney and eliminated from the body through the urine. If you suffer from this disease, you body probably has an increased production of uric acid that cannot be processed and eliminated efficiently. This condition is called hyperuricemia.

Urine test

Patients should be checked for the following medications before the urine test: diuretics, aspirin, pyrazinamide (Tebrazid), phenylbutazone, probenecid (Benemid), and allopurinol (Lopurin). If the patient needs to continue taking these medications, the laboratory should be notified.

Abnormal results

The critical value for the blood test is a level of uric acid higher than 12 milligrams per deciliter (about 3.4 ounces).

The leading super fruit company in the U.S. is Fruit Advantage. The company offers a complete line of super fruit products including tart cherry capsules.

Because nothing is simple in medicine and life, irony strikes in gout case as well. There are people who have risen uric acid levels, but never actually have to deal with gout and there are others that have gout despite the fact that their levels of uric acid are normal.

Normal results

Blood test

Reference values for blood uric acid vary from laboratory to laboratory but are generally found within the following range: Male: 2.1-8.5 mg/dL; female: 2.0-6.6 mg/dL. Values may be slightly higher in the elderly.

You are dealing with a serious disease and you should choose a treatment that works to decrease uric acid levels in the body. You should consider a gout alternative treatment along with your anti-inflammatories and pain killers.

Uric acid is a waste product that results from the breakdown of purine, a nucleic acid. (Nucleic acids are the building blocks of DNA.) Uric acid is made in the liver and excreted by the kidneys. If the liver produces too much uric acid or the kidneys excrete too little, the patient will have too much uric acid in the blood. This condition is called hyperuricemia. Supersaturated uric acid in the urine (uricosuria) can crystallize to form kidney stones that may block the tubes that lead from the kidneys to the bladder (the ureters).

Because there is no traditional cure for gout, gout alternative treatments have been the newest rave with this type of arthritis. Millions of people suffer from this painful type of arthritis that is contributed to high levels of uric acid between the joints. And these gout remedies work because they naturally lower the levels of uric acid by flushing it out of the body.

Description

The uric acid blood test is performed on a sample of the patient's blood, withdrawn from a vein into a vacuum tube. The procedure, which is called a venipuncture, takes about five minutes. The urine test requires the patient to collect all urine voided over a 24-hour period, with the exception of the very first specimen. The patient keeps the specimen container on ice or in the refrigerator during the collection period.

Though uric acid crystals will still be in the joints, you can dramatically decrease the gout attacks by learning how to relieve and cure gout symptoms. Let me explain!

Certain foods that are high in purine may increase the patient's levels of uric acid. These include kidneys, liver, sweetbreads, sardines, anchovies, and meat extracts.

5. Water can also greatly assist in the prevention and formation of uric acid crystals. In addition, water can also help your body flush the crystals once they have formed!

The uric acid tests are used to evaluate the blood levels of uric acid for gout and to assess uric acid levels in the urine for kidney stone formation. The urine test is used most often to monitor patients already diagnosed with kidney stones, but it can also be used to detect disorders that affect the body's production of uric acid and to help measure the level of kidney functioning.
